Can You Use a Regular Fish Finder for Ice Fishing? (Kayak Units Too)
Yes. A regular or kayak fish finder works on the ice with an ice transducer and a battery. Here's which ice kit fits Garmin, Humminbird, Lowrance and Deeper units.

Yes. The display you run on your kayak or boat all summer works on the ice. What changes is everything around it: you need a transducer made to hang in a hole, a battery that isn't wired into a hull, and a way to carry it all.
The cleanest way to get there is the ice kit your fish finder's manufacturer sells for your exact model. Below is which kit fits which unit, what each one includes, and the settings and battery mistakes to avoid.
This guide is research-based. It's built from manufacturer specifications, owner's manuals and retailer listings, not from our own time on the ice.
What has to change to use a regular fish finder on the ice?
Three things change; the display itself doesn't.
- The transducer. Kayak and boat transducers are built to sit in a scupper, inside the hull or on a transom while you move. An ice transducer hangs straight down through the hole on its cable, held level by a foam float, and its cable is made to stay flexible in the cold. Garmin, for example, markets the cables in its ice kits as silicone-coated for winter conditions.
- The power. On a kayak your unit runs off a battery wired into the boat. On the ice you need a small, self-contained 12V battery with a cable that plugs into the display.
- The carry setup. You need a case or shuttle that holds the display, battery and transducer together so you can walk it across the ice and set up at each hole.
Manufacturer ice kits bundle all three, which is why they're the simplest route.

| Humminbird HELIX 5 with CHIRP (G2 and newer) | Humminbird ICE PTC CHIRP H5 FB (740206-1) | Battery and charger are not included. |
| Humminbird HELIX 5 or 7 without CHIRP (older SONAR / GPS models) | Humminbird ICE PTC XI 9 20 H57 | For non-CHIRP models only; listings say it doesn't fit HELIX 7 G4N. Battery sold separately. |
| Humminbird HELIX 7 to 10 with CHIRP | Humminbird HELIX ICE Conversion Kit (740202-1) | A larger shuttle with rod holders. Battery sold separately. |
| Lowrance HOOK Reveal 5 | Lowrance's ice transducer for HOOK Reveal, or the HOOK Reveal 5 All-Season Pack | The All-Season Pack includes a new display, so it only makes sense if you're buying the unit anyway. |
| Deeper PRO, PRO+ or CHIRP (castable) | Nothing extra | Drop it in the hole and switch the app to Ice Fishing Mode. |

Can you just use your kayak's transducer instead?
Not well. A scupper or in-hull kayak transducer isn't designed to hang in a hole, and pulling it out of its mount every winter risks the mount and the cable. An ice transducer is cheaper and easier than the workaround.
There is one scouting trick that uses no hole at all. Several ice-fishing guides describe placing a transducer on clear, smooth ice with a little water poured underneath. With no air between the transducer and the ice, sonar passes through and shows depth before you drill. It doesn't work through snow, slush or cloudy ice, and you still fish through a hole.
How do you switch from kayak to ice?
The whole changeover takes minutes once you have the kit.
- Unplug the display from your kayak's power and transducer cables. Leave the kayak transducer mounted where it is.
- Seat the display in the ice kit's case or shuttle.
- Plug in the ice transducer and the kit's power cable.
- Charge the battery indoors, then do a power-on test at home so you're not troubleshooting on the ice.
- On the ice, drop the transducer so it hangs level just below the bottom edge of the ice, with the float keeping it centered in the hole.
In spring, reverse it: display back on the kayak mount, plug in the kayak power and transducer, and you're on open water again.
What settings should you change on the ice?
Switch to the flasher view, slow the scrolling chart, and adjust sensitivity by hand.
- Flasher view. Garmin's STRIKER Plus ice fishing manual describes a built-in flasher that shows the bottom, your jig and fish on a circular depth scale. That's the most useful view when you're sitting over one hole. Humminbird and Lowrance units have their own ice and flasher views; check your model's manual for the menu location.
- Chart speed. A scrolling chart is built for a moving boat. A common tip in ice-fishing forums is to turn chart speed down as far as it goes when you're stationary.
- Sensitivity and interference. On a crowded lake, other anglers' sonar can show up as noise on your screen. Dedicated ice flashers handle this with interference rejection; on a regular unit, try a different frequency or lower sensitivity until the noise drops.
What battery do you need on the ice?
A small 12V battery that you charge indoors. Garmin's ice kits include a rechargeable battery and charger. Humminbird's kits don't, so budget for one.
If you buy a lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) battery, know the cold-weather rule: don't charge it below freezing. Battery maker Bioenno Power explains that charging below 32°F (0°C) can plate lithium on the anode, costing capacity and creating safety risk, and recommends letting a cold battery warm to at least 40°F (5°C) before charging. Running your fish finder off it in the cold is fine, just less efficient. Charging is what has to happen somewhere warm.
Shop 12V Fish Finder BatteriesIs a regular fish finder as good as an ice flasher?
For most people starting out, it's close enough. A dedicated flasher is still the specialist tool, and here's the trade-off.
Pros
- One display for kayak season and ice season
- A conversion kit usually costs less than a new flasher
- GPS and mapping (on units that have them) let you mark holes and structure
- Built-in flasher views on many units cover vertical jigging
Cons
- Dedicated flashers are effectively real time, which matters when you're watching a jig
- Flashers are built to reject interference from nearby sonar
- Cold drains batteries faster, so plan for shorter runtimes
If you already own a compatible unit, convert it first. If ice fishing turns into your main season, that's the time to look at a dedicated flasher.
What about castable fish finders?
A castable like the Deeper PRO+ needs no conversion at all. According to Deeper's ice fishing guide, the PRO, PRO+ and CHIRP models are rated to operate down to -4°F (-20°C). You drop the sonar into the center of the hole and turn on Ice Fishing Mode in the app. The entry-level Deeper START is not rated for ice use.
Two cold-weather catches from the same guide: the sonar and your phone both drain faster below freezing, and the sonar shouldn't be charged below about 37°F (3°C). Keep both in an inside pocket between holes.

Do you need a fish finder for ice fishing?
No, but it saves a lot of drilling. Without one, you're guessing at depth and whether fish are under the hole. With one, you can check a hole in a minute and move on if nothing shows.
Can you use a Humminbird fish finder for ice fishing?
Yes. Humminbird sells ice kits matched to HELIX models: the ICE PTC CHIRP H5 FB for HELIX 5 CHIRP units, the ICE PTC XI 9 20 H57 for older non-CHIRP HELIX 5 and 7 units, and the HELIX ICE Conversion Kit for larger CHIRP models. None of them include a battery.
Will the cold damage my fish finder?
Displays generally handle the cold; the weak points are the battery and a transducer frozen into the hole. Keep the battery insulated, charge it indoors, and lift the transducer out of the hole before it freezes in place.
Can a fish finder read through the ice?
Sometimes. On clear, smooth ice with water poured under the transducer, sonar can pass through and show depth before you drill. It won't work through snow, slush or air pockets, so treat it as a quick scouting check.
The bottom line
If you already run a Garmin Striker, Humminbird HELIX 5 or Lowrance HOOK Reveal on your kayak, buy the manufacturer's ice kit for your exact model rather than a new flasher. For Striker owners, the Garmin Small Portable Ice Fishing Kit is the most complete option because it includes the battery and charger.
